There are many ways to save money year-round. But summer, with so many outdoor activities and reduced costs to maintain your home, seems to be the optimum time to get in the mindset of living in a more fiscally fit manner. By using SmartyPig you can get that summer vacation paid for without the worry of credit card debt; same for if you’re getting married – save up, spend wisely. What about all the other days of summer, though?

We’ve found some tips at ABC News and Quick & Simple to help you not just stay on the path toward reaching your goals, but also to make summer a little less costly while being just as much fun.

We save money because we utilize all the FREE kids’ programs running through the summer–free books with the summer library program plus B&N and Borders; free movies at our local theater, magic shows and puppet shows at the library, parks and playgrounds, etc. There’s a ton to do with the kids and as long as I pack lunches and snacks, we don’t spend extra $$ being out all day.

I join my electric company’s electricity cycling program. During high demand events, they reduce the time my AC runs, a percentage selectable by the user. They also provide a free programmable thermostat. With credits toward my bill, as well as the reduced amount of electricity I use, we can save hundreds of dollars every summer.

The weather is nice so I walk or ride my bike to work everyday instead of taking the bus. Savings = $80/mo.

I get out and do my errands on my bike since the weather is nice. You would be surprised how simple it is when you get a back pack to carry everything! Now if only there was an easier way to bring the groceries home….

Summer’s a great time to save lots of money on activities since you can do plenty of things outside for free. You can go to the beach, explore different national parks, and just simply enjoy the nice summer weather. Maybe have a yard sale and clean out your garage while making an extra buck, too! The only thing that costs a lot during summer is central AC but since last summer we’ve converted to stand-alone cooling units that work just as well yet saves us lots of money!

I try to think about whether I would buy something at all if not “bargain”. If yes, then I proceed IF I have the funds or it is an ABSOLUTE necessity. If my answer is NO, then I think about whether it is a “treat”, and again whether I have the money (this is where “deals”, cpns, etc allow me to buy things that are wants not needs!) One big obstacle for most is KNOWING the difference between a want and a need, especially in these days world!
