Panic-Free Trip to the Auto Shop

Car expenses are never enjoyable. For those who prepare, however, they can be slightly more tolerable than a trip to the dentist’s office. Take SmartyPig user Drew for example. Drew is one smart cookie. Drew started a SmartyPig goal entitled, “car problems” with the expectation that when it comes to cars, something can, and usually will, go wrong at exactly the wrong time.

Drew had been putting a small amount into his goal each month, $50 to $75. Nothing life-altering, but enough in case something came up. Well, he took his car in for a routine oil change last week and was informed his engine belt was severely worn. Drew replied, “Cars wear belts too?” To Drew’s dismay they do, and furthermore his was about to snap. Then more bad news: his worn tires would not need replacement (phew) but would need rotating. One oil change, tire rotation, new belt and a good chunk of change later he was back on the road.

While the expense is “nothing major” to Drew, his tweet proclaiming his relief for his SmartyPig “car problems” goal caught our attention. Lucky for Drew, his SmartyPig goal saved him a whole lot of panic when the register rang up his repairs. And because you just “never know” with cars, Drew plans to continue to save for the unexpected. Something we all could do a little more of.

Nice work Drew!

Wishing you and the other emergency savers like you, successful saving.

“Drew plans to continue to save for the unexpected”
Even the expected, like property taxes twice a year, can still be a shock. I’ve estimated mine based on previous years and set up a Smarty Pig account called, creatively enough, Property Tax. Now it won’t be such a painfully predictable surprise.

Maybe you could partner with cities for discounts…. :-)

Ha, Mark! I, too, save for property taxes for January, school taxes for September and village taxes for July! There may be more “fun” things to save for, however, this really helps me out. Thank you, SP!
