Guest Post by Galia Gichon

Ever notice how it seems like everyone else is going on an amazing vacation? And when you sit down at the end of the month and are trying to find those extra dollars for the vacation, you just can't seem to stretch that dollar enough. One of the keys to making it happen is putting the fun back in your money. How? Follow these easy steps.

1. Associate the Fun with the Not-So-Fun.

If you are like most of us, figuring out your mutual fund allocations is as much fun as going to the dentist. But what if you crossed learning about mutual funds with your favorite hobby such as yoga or watching NASCAR? It could be as easy as that. Start associating the two. Every time you plan to take a yoga class or watch a race on TV, you have to look up a mutual fund you own on www.morningstar.com, or read a few pages of Money Magazine or even ask a smart friend about their mutual funds in their 401k BEFOREHAND. Put it in the schedule and then you have permission to om away!

2. Running to Ratios.

You are so wild about running, you would run every night after work or sign up for a 5k every weekend if you didn't have other obligations. But what if you could start learning key financial terms such as expense ratio, exchange traded funds and asset allocation, while you are making your mileage every week? Take advantage of that time running by downloading some interesting and FUNNY podcasts from NPR or iTunes onto your ipod. Most are free. My favorites are: Planet Money (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94427042) and Marketplace (http://marketplace.publicradio.org/).

3. Live a "Seinfeld" Episode.

One of my favorite "Seinfeld" episodes is the one where Jerry and the gang decide to live in an opposite world. All their actions were supposed to be opposite what they usually did. Why not tackle this idea with your money? If you usually pay for everything with credit cards, try just using cash for one week.

4. Reward Yourself.

For every $1,000 you save, go out for dinner at your favorite restaurant. Set a goal, stick to using innovative sites like SmartyPig. Yes, you are spending money, but you also have a plan and are sticking to it!

5. Find a Buddy.

It's always easier to reach your goals when you work together. Go through your FACEBOOK page and look for friends with good money habits and share your own, or bloggers you enjoy who are on the right path.

After experiencing the pitfalls of the current economy, New York Times columnist Ron Lieber was left with an extra week and a half worth of "vacation" to compensate for financial difficulties at the famed publication. But rather than lazing around during the dog days of summer, Mr. Lieber decided to stop putting off money related tasks and create a fiscal health day.

Now we love the coverage, but what we really loved is the lesson shared. There is so much we can do everyday to make our lives better from an economic point of view, and we encourage you to follow in Mr. Lieber's footsteps, creating your own financial health day. Figure out where you can pinch pennies, how you can save more and guarantee overall better fiscal fitness. Be it finally balancing the checkbook, organizing the bank statements, cutting back on the things you don't need, freezing your credit cards or starting a high interest bearing SmartyPig account like Mr. Lieber did, creating a day for getting your finances in order is a step in the right direction.

Another step in the right direction? Letting us pay you for your ideas!

Tell us what YOU would do to improve your finances on your very own fiscal health day by leaving a comment below. We'll randomly select 3 entries and send those chosen, a $100, $50 or $25 SmartyPig gift card in the order in which they were drawn.

Post time ends on Monday, July 13th at 3pm CST. We're looking forward to hearing all of the creative ways you're improving your fiscal health.

Good luck!

smartypig savingmoney contest

Can Saving Sink Us?

The savings rate increased dramatically in May to 6.9%, the highest it's been in more than fifteen years. That sparked a few questions from Paul La Monica at CNN Money, "Do you think consumers are saving too much and hurting the economy?" or "Should people continue to be frugal and save more?"

It's a slippery slope. Using our homes as ATM machines and living on plastic got us where we are today, no doubt. A few years ago, folks on average were spending $102 of every $100 they made. Now, on average, they're spending about $93. The old way wasn't working out. People made a collective change. There is one problem, though. Almost all of those new savers work for or own companies that have been depending on that extra $9. So are we doing more harm than good? Well, positive change can sometimes feel quite negative.

In the article, La Monica writes, "This newfound sense of frugality is undeniably a good thing. If consumers are no longer willing to amass unhealthy piles of debt for things they can't afford, then we can hopefully avoid such severe recessions." But there's more to it than that. We don't have to abandon the car; we just need to put on the brakes. Saving isn't just for a rainy day - no matter how long this storm seems to be lasting. The silver lining: you CAN afford the things you want, you just need to shift how you go about paying for them.

Setting saving goals for the things you want in life puts in place a solid plan for the future. It's not money borrowed from a bank or from a high-rate credit card company but cash earning you interest while you reach for that goal. And while instant gratification is difficult to move away from, and while it's even more difficult to watch businesses hurting, in the end, because of changing the "buy now, pay later" mindset, the entire economy and all who make it work will greatly benefit.

smartypig saving money debt
